Greyhounds as Pets hosts adoption day at Dapto this Saturday

Thursday nights are a hive of activity at Dapto’s Showgrounds, home of the Illawarra’s iconic “Dapto dogs”.

The sand will be well settled and the betting ring less hectic this Saturday but the site will come alive with an expected 25 retired chasers back on track – this time looking for a ‘forever’ home.

Greyhounds as Pets, an initiative of Greyhound Racing NSW, will partner with the Dapto Greyhound Racing Club to host the first adoption day at the venue.

With a reputation of having a gentle nature, greyhounds love to run but the program has shown they can easily adapt to domestic lifestyle, Greyhounds as Pets spokesperson Lori McKern said.

“Our national adoption day at Wentworth Park in April was a great success with over 40 greyhounds finding their new home on the day,” McKern said.

“Dapto will be a wonderful, fun and educational day for those keen to adopt on the day or those looking to just find out more.

“Greyhounds as Pets have adopted lots of greyhounds into the Illawarra region and we are keen to see this expand into the future.

“We are looking to bring along around 25 greyhounds up for adoption.

“Greyhounds can make great pets for a wide variety of homes and we pride ourselves on matching a greyhound that we believe best suits the needs and lifestyle the adopter has to offer.

“Greyhounds as Pets pre and post adoption support is second to none and we are with the adopter every step of the way.”

McKern said greyhound adoption is surging in popularity.

“GAP’s support continues for the life of the dog and we are just thrilled when people come back for their second, and sometimes third, retiree.” McKern added.

GAP host up to six adoption days in different regions annually.

McKern said the process is designed to provide adopters with all the information they need to cater for the greyhound’s needs and training in pet life.
