An Illawarra man has been arrested and charged with the shooting murder of Nathan Costello at Unanderra on Valentine’s Day.
Costello was fatally gunned down outside a home on Carr Parade in the early hours of February 14, in what police at the time labelled a “targeted attack” on the 33-year-old “career criminal”.
Detectives set up Strike Force Gangele to investigate the circumstances surrounding Costello’s death, interviewing several neighbours and witnesses and combing nearby streets for evidence.
A NSW Police Force spokeswoman confirmed late Thursday evening that police had made an arrest in the case, saying detectives had stopped a 33-year-old man driving a car at Warrawong about lunchtime.
He was taken to Lake Illawarra Police Station and charged with murder.
The man was refused bail overnight and is due to appear in Wollongong Local Court today.
Those close to Costello paid tribute to him at the time of his death, with posts on social media saying he “will be missed by many” and telling him to “rest in peace” and “fly high”.
Neighbours told the Mercury they were woken by the sound of gunshots in the street just after 2am.
Emergency services arrived a short time later with police officers performing CPR until paramedics arrived, however Costello could not be revived.
Police were also investigating whether a burnt out car, found at Cordeaux Heights shortly after the shooting, was linked with the incident.
