It is easy in this era of social media to get bogged down in negativity, but Adam understand our city and our region stands for acceptance, diversity and imagination. That can not be questioned.
That has been well documented and proven as recently as the vote for marriage equality. The city even proudly flew the rainbow flag over council headquarters during that period.
In the main we are a forward-thinking, progressive community and we strongly defend the right of the individual to be themselves.
So Adam our message to you as Miss Roxee is never change. Just be yourself and remember for every hater, there are more supporters.
Roxee is a welcomed and celebrated identity in our community and we have enjoyed being a part of your journey.
We saw you represent the region so well co-hosting MTV’s coverage of Sydney’s Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras in 2017 and you did a wonderful job hosting Spring Into Corrimal as well.
The Wollongong City Library is to be congratulated in joining in the fun for the Queer Arts Festival, asking Miss Roxee to host a Drag Storytime event at the library on July 21.
We passionately support the council and library’s stance in continuing to hold strong despite the attacks of people on social media, some of whom are seemingly blaming the downfall of society on this event.
Seriously people, it is the year 2018.
In response to some of those comments, the library posted on its Facebook page _
We do not accept or tolerate hateful speech or malicious remarks designed to hurt or personally attack people. Any comments of this nature will be removed.
We support and stand by our event and the Library as being a safe and inclusive space for our community.
And so it should be.
The answer to the haters is simple.
You don’t like it?
Fine. Don’t go.
And maybe next time you are at the library you could check out a book which might help you in your quest to be a bit more understanding and accepting of others.
Whether you like it or not, this country is moving past the dark days of the days. Why don’t you join us.
