It happened when three-year-old Yorick Owen ran over to drag queen Miss Roxee and threw his arms around the star mid-performance.
“It was surreal,” Adam Larkham - who performs as Miss Roxee - told the Mercury.
“At first I was taken aback because i just didn’t expect it. But the reaction from everybody was exactly how I felt when he came up and did that.”
Mum Megan Owen said Miss Roxee made her son feel really welcome at the library.
“Yorick has been really excited about meeting Miss Roxee,” she said. “He must have felt very comfortable.”
Mrs Owen found out about the Storytime event from the library and said all three of her children, Yorick, Ivy and Elke, were eager to attend when she told them about it.
“He is a nice boy and I think Miss Roxee put on a great show and made him feel really welcome at the library,” Mrs Owen said.
“I am really excited by the library’s promotion of inclusive events like this. I would love to see more of them”.
“I am really proud of my city and I am really proud of Wollongong City Council and specifically the library for making this amazing event happen.”
Mrs Owen said seeing so many people turn out was incredible.
“The community response today has been warm and welcoming and friendly and exciting. There is a real festival atmosphere in the air. And my kids have definitely had a great day.”
Father Dallas Owen said he thought it was great to see his son embrace the moment.
Drag Storytime with Miss Roxee started with a huge round of applause and involved stories, singing and craft.
Roxee read The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle, Love Makes a Family by Sophie Beer and We are Family by Patricia Hegarty.
Between each story there were songs such as Old McDonald Had a Farm and Twinkle Twinkle Little Star with ukulele accompaniment.
