I cast my mind back to 1990 when WCC planned to develop a regional sports centre at Brandon Park.
The plan was scuttled by the selfishness of some rugby league officials who did not want to move from the showground and in a total act of bastardry the State Government took control of both the Showground and Brandon Park off WCC and proceed to sell off Brandon Park thus robbing Wollongong of the sporting complex the city of Wollongong needs and deserves.
Paul Scully says it's a waste of time preparing a sporting plan for the future as Wollongong is no longer in any funding group.
There will be many elections before any work starts, so let's set a goal to host the 2050 Commonwealth Games. Firstly we need to find a suitable location.
I am proposing land that BSL have recognised as surplus to their needs be considered. The land proposed is; the area between Springhill Road and the Port Kembla rail line (the horse paddock).
Relocate the football fields from the showground here; and the visitors centre, relocate the WEC to here greatly enhanced to cater for greater range of activities.
I also propose developing the northern half of 21 Dump, west of the horse paddocks, to cater for other sports including an athletic track, Olympic Pool complex and a fully functional institute of sport.
The WIN stadium can be redeveloped to be Wollongong's major entertainment precinct with five-star hotel and conference centre, eateries etc.
As Wollongong has now been elevated from Regional to Metropolitan It is time the State Government funded sporting complex compatible with those they are building or proposing for Sydney Metropolitan areas.
Rather than develop scattered sporting complexes, the three levels of Government should seek to pool their funds to provide a sporting complex that is capable of holding the Commonwealth games.

WATCHING FOR CHANGE
Having watched the bi-election results on Sunday morning, I can only presume that there are a lot more “Lefties” in the country than the few who write to the Illawarra Mercury letter pages.
On Sunday morning ,I was thinking of a well known tune and made up my own words.
“The Lefties are marching on again, Hoorah, Hoorah”.
Also, the “Kill Bill” stunt, turned out to be a big fizzer as well.
I believe that voters are sick of hearing Bill Shorten’ s name over and over, being blamed for all the Government woes.
Now let’s see what will change over the next 12 month to general election time.
I predict a big change in bad policies, and a few back flips.
