The Illawarra’s older surfers have also excelled in recent weeks at the NSW Junior Surfing Titles.

Port Kembla’s Charli Hurst was among the best of the juniors, taking fourth place in the under 16 girls competition.

Fellow Port Kembla resident Taj Simon also performed exceptionally well at the Coffs Harbour-based competition, qualifying for the semi-finals of the under 16 boys event.

In the older age group, Darcy Air surfed well throughout the event to earn a place in the under 18 girls semi-final before she was narrowly eliminated in a tight heat.

Air was forced to take on fellow local Summer Simon in the second round, claiming a decisive victory.

Austinmer’s Fin McLaren progressed through to the under 18 boys semi-final after winning a high-quality quarter-final. He was unable to progress through to the final, falling in another hotly-contested heat.
