The Suns would need Figtree to lose their three remaining games – and secure a dramatic percentage swing – in the final rounds, but Coate is looking to the future, hoping the last month of games will set the tone for next year. 

And after beating the Dogs, Shellharbour are targeting at least three wins in the last four rounds, with Figtree, Kiama and Northern Districts to come. 

“I think it’s important to finish the season as well as we can,” Coate said. 

“During the year I’ve had to learn as a coach and develop what we do, so if nothing else it’s an opportunity to try a few things which could work down the track.

“The Dogs looked a bit flat and I’m really happy we took advantage of it.”

The Suns’ bid for a late season resurgence comes as competition front-runners Kiama and Wollongong Lions set up a tantalising showdown after next weekend’s general bye. 

The Power required an impressive four-goal, third quarter performance to bush aside Figtree at Bonaira Oval. 

Kiama led by 10 points at half-time, before running out 9.12 (66) to 5.8 (38) winners. 

The Roos loss meant the Bulldogs stayed in third on the ladder. Meanwhile, the Lions, only behind Kiama on percentage, dominated the last quarter to finish 11.14 (80) to 3.4 (22) winners against Northern Districts at North Dalton Park.
