A man who was seen walking towards Wollongong’s main shopping strip with an axe on Friday afternoon has been charged by police.

Wollongong police were called to Crown Street about 5pm on Friday following reports of the armed man.
Police will allege two men, who are known to each other, were involved in a verbal altercation near the intersection of Atchison Street, before one of the men produced an axe.
Officers from Wollongong Police Transport Command attended and arrested a 25-year-old man.
A tomahawk and box cutter were seized.
The man was taken to Wollongong Police Station where he charged with armed with intent to commit serious indictable offence, custody of offensive implement in public place, and custody of knife in public place.
He was refused bail and was due appear in Wollongong court.
