Surfer David Freel was up for an early morning surf at Bombo Beach when he saw the wombat and captured the rare sighting on camera.
He shared the footage via social media.
“A little companion for my early surf this morning at Bombo,” Mr Freel said.
The wombat has fast-become a popular local identity.
Within hours Mr Freel’s post on the Kiama Community page had hundreds of likes and more than a hundred comments.
“Oh I have seen him crossing the road near Bombo before,” Bronwyn Eastment said via social media.
“What a treat.”

The undeniably cute wombat already has an alter ego, thanks to Kiama Community page follower Jess Kearns.
“Do you mind David?” she said.
“I'd like to have a swim and a rumble in the sand without being made famous.”
