Illawarra commuters to the city are getting to Central station almost an hour early in order to get a seat on what is a crowded service, according to Wollongong MP Paul Scully.

In parliament recently, Mr Scully raised the issue of the “chronically overcrowded” 3.24pm and 3.54pm services.
He said some commuters looking to catch the 3.24pm service get to the platform at Central a long time before the train arrived.
“In order to have a chance of getting a seat on that service – not a guarantee of a seat – people are lining up 45 minutes early,” Mr Scully said.
“They stand on the platform for 45 minutes and then board a train where they are unlikely to find a seat because it is only a four-car service.”
Speaking outside parliament, Mr Scully said that information came out of a survey from his office asking commuters for their issues when it came to the South Coast line.
“There was a range of complaints and concerns that commuters have reported back to me,” he said.
“One of the ones that came back a few times was that people are having to line up for up to 45 minutes in advance for the chance of having a seat.”
