The female worker was going about her checkout duties in January last year when her drug-fuelled attacker, Mervyn Davidson, stormed into the store and knocked her unconscious with a single blow.
A co-worker, Robert Guevara, and customer Manuel Melgarejo then stepped in, with Mr Melgarejo ramming his trolley at the attacker and Mr Guevara coming at him barehanded from behind, before both men and other customers restrain him.
In an interview with the Mercury earlier this year, Mr Melgarejo said he was "no hero" for stepping in.
"People had left their trolleys and run, so I grabbed one,” he said. “I tried to negotiate with him, but he was going to hit her again so I pushed the trolley into him.
"Then Robert came around and grabbed the bat out of his hand, I got him round the waist and we got him on the ground and pinned him down.
"He was on ice and as strong as anything so it was a struggle to keep him down, but others jumped in and helped grab an arm or a leg."
The Australian Bravery Decorations Council notes Mr Guevara acted “without concern for his own safety” before jumping onto Davidson, who continued to wildly swing the bat around, hitting Mr Guevara several times.
