The All Star Comedy Comp will run heats at five venues across the region with winners to progress onto a monthly final at Ryans Hotel in Thirroul. The winner of that event will head along to the grand final and a chance at $5000 at The Builders Club, Wollongong, next year.
“The scene is growing in the ‘Gong, there’s a few [open mic] rooms going and we thought it was the perfect time to make Wollongong the funniest place on earth,” said event co-organiser Martin Henchion.
Each heat is an open-mic for new or established comedians to make a crowd laugh, with headliners in between. If a contestant bombs out in one heat they will be allowed to have another crack at another heat.
Henchion hopes the competition will pump up the “scene” further in the region and turn Wollongong “into the Nashville of comedy”.
“Nashville is country music heaven, an innocuous town that became what it is,” he said.
“We want to do the same thing with Wollongong with comedy. It’s raising the standards and the audiences here are really great here, it’s a great place for comedians to get better and grow the industry.”
Overall there will be 85 events in one year.
The competition will be launched with some of the Illawarra’s favourite comedians plus headline act Peter Berner on August 31 at Ryan’s Hotel in Thirroul.
