A sneak peek inside the first of two new Wollongong nightclubs

The first of two new Wollongong nightclubs opens on September 1 when Tusk charges in as the reborn Ivory in lower Crown Street.

The site at 77 Crown Street has had a complete fit-out during the past seven months in an area boasting a slew of new restaurants, bars and apartments.

The arrival of Tusk follows the recent opening of Night Parrot, Coffee ClubCiao Cucina, 1796, Furphy Bar, a revamped Samara’s restaurant coming soon in the former Inferno site and Howlin’ Wolf taking ownership of Dagwood and expanding the menu.

Tusk is described as having a “modern African theme”, with an extensive beverage offering at the bar, shared-plate menu and a lounge area to cater for smaller functions..

Co-owner Lu Ristov, who also operates the Harp Hotel, Mr Crown and The Grand Hotel, said the new bar would have “an early evening bar feel”.

“This space will open a lot earlier than what the Ivory did in the past,” he said.

“We have employed a whole new crew of bar staff, and we have some new DJs coming and a light food selection.

“Part of our motivation was to do something new down here to compliment this area and grow the night scene.

“We’re co-operating with the other guys who are doing great stuff such as Howlin’ Wolf and Night Parrot.”

Next, Mr Ristov has plans to reopen another nightclub on Keira Street.

“Following on from this makeover we are moving the fit-out team to Keira Street where there is a nightclub called 151,” he said.

“We are going up there to rebrand and redo that as our next project. It has been shut for a while and only opening up for special events.”

Tusk will open Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights from 6pm to 3am.
