The revamped 1796’s first two nights on Friday and Saturday were completely booked out in advance after news spread about the makeover with an historic feel.
Located on the northern end of The Brewery at the WIN Entertainment Centre the former cocktail bar has transformed into a new-look wine bar with sauvignon blanc on tap.
The nautical theme is based on the day George Bass, Matthew Flinders and William Martin landed on a Wollongong beach 222 years ago in the Tom Thumb.
The Brewery general manager Mitch Bathis said “there has been so much interest in us opening people will need to make reservations”.
1796 is open from 4pm to 10pm Thursday to Sunday and available for private function bookings at other times. The bar features international and organic wine, gin, whiskey, French champagne and Asahi beer.
The kitchen at The Brewery has come up with a new menu especially for 1796. Head chef Calum Howlett said the new-look nightspot will feature share boards for people to enjoy with their friends.
