Four Illawarra school’s have shone during the Wollongong leg of the 2018 Wakakirri Story Dance Challenge.

A number of schools came together at the WIN Entertainment Centre recently to perform original Story Dance productions that reflect their students’ thoughts, ideas and aspirations.
Mount Warrigal Public School and Tullimbar Public School were nominated for the national Story of the Year Award.
Tullimbar PS also won the Best Cultural Celebration Story Award for their reimagining of of how Banjo Patterson came to write Australia’s best known ballad, Waltzing Matilda.
Mount Warrigal PS also took home the Best Thriller/Action Story Award for ‘Cursed’, a performance about a town haunted by a ghost and one brave upstander who chooses to ask her what she wants.
Mount Brown Public School won the Best Biographical History Story Award for their retelling of the little-known story of Sophie Blanchard.
Gerringong PS was also presented the Best Motivational Story Award for Journey, described as a wondrous tale about unexpected friendship.
Hi-5 performer Casey Burgess hosted the WEC event. Wakakirri national panel representatives Joshua Horner (So You Think You Can Dance) and Sally Hane (Opera Australia) were also in the audience.
Wakakirri’s Story of the Year Award for Primary and Secondary categories will be announced on Waka TV on October 17.
