The choir, whose members are all orphans from Uganda, are in the midst of a tour of Australia which includes three performances in the Illawarra.
On Saturday, September 1 the choir will perform hit songs from their Signs & Wonders Production at Cedars Christian College in Farmborough Heights from 5.30pm.
The following day the choir, which raises awareness and presents opportunities to make a difference through sponsorship programs offered or donations to help fund projects in Uganda, will play a concert at Austinmer Anglican College from 6pm.
The 18-member choir will also perform at Figtree Anglican Church on Wednesday, September 5 from 7pm.
All performances are free and open to the public.
Ivan Masembe (pictured) is excited to be part of the Watoto Children’s Choir.
Before the 13-year-old joined Watoto, his father had abandoned their family, leaving his unemployed mother without support.
Ivan remembers how Watoto came alongside his mother at a time that they were really desperate and didn’t know where the next meal would come from.
“Since joining Watoto, I have learned how to be excellent in everything I do. They have taught me how to respect people, work with others, and help my mother,” he said.
Ivan added he was excited to perform in Australia.
“I hope to see kangaroos and look forward to meeting people at the different places we’ll be performing at. My favourite thing about the production is the dancing,” he said.
Watoto is a holistic child-care solution initiated to serve the dire needs of the people of Africa.
Since 1994, Watoto Children’s Choirs have traveled the world sharing the plight of Africa’s orphaned children.
