The city’s NPL side has had a week to remember indeed.
First came the announcement former Socceroo Luke Wilkshire was taking the reigns as head coach of the club after the departure of Jacob Timpano.
Not only that but Wilkshire will be assisted by former Leeds United striker Michael Bridges in his first foray into coaching.
You would have been forgiven for thinking the naming of a Socceroo and a former EPL star in their coaching ranks would have been the top of the charts for the Wolves and the rest of the week would have gone quietly.
Then came the Bolt from the blue.
On Wednesday afternoon the Illawarra Mercury broke the exclusive, the fastest man to ever walk (or run) on the earth would be coming to Wollongong in October.
The eight-time Olympic champion is trying to launch a professional football career and will play for the Central Coast Mariners in a game against the Wollongong Wolves at WIN Stadium on October 6.
The interest around Bolt’s career switch, both nationally and internationally, has been enormous.
“This is a massive opportunity for the people of the South Coast to watch their local team take on an A-league club and one of the world’s greatest ever athletes,” Wolves chairman Tory Lavelle said.
The news comes as the Wollongong Wolves continue to push for inclusion into the A-League and the announcement received a large response online.
“Usain Bolt vs the Wolves,.surely a sell out,” one response on Facebook said.
One wag even suggested they should put Bolt in the Chase the Wolf, the popular Wolves game entertainment which sees kids try and chase down the Wolves’ mascot.
Bolt would be an unbackable favourite in that race.
This will undoubtedly be one of the best attended, most talked about pre-season games of any format this region has ever seen.
A Bolt from the blue indeed.
