Wollongong Saints were held goalless in a shattering end to the season for the region’s premiers women’s Australian football club.

It was just their third loss for the season, but the Saints were blown away by the Western Magic in the third quarter and never recovered, going down 6.4 (40) to 0.4 (4).

In a remarkably game, the Magic kicked the only goal of the first half to lead 8-3, before blowing the contest wide open after the main break. Alicia Anderson was rated as the Saints’ best in defeat, while Jenni Stanton and Nicola Kennedy also worked hard.

The Saints finished with the minor premiership, before losing the major semi-final to the Magic and then producing a massive last quarter to beat the East Coast Eagles in last weekend’s preliminary final.

They’ve made five grand finals in nine years, winning the flag in 2011 and last year, when they beat the Magic by 22 points.

Their second-tier team bowed out of the inaugural AFL South Coast finals in the elimination final.
