Two Wollongong sci-fi fans are excited they won’t have to travel to see Jodie Whittaker take control of the TARDIS as the 13th Doctor on October 8.

The highly anticipated new series of Doctor Who will begin with a movie-length first episode screened at more than 70 cinemas Australia-wide, but the NSW South Coast was originally left off the list completely.
Mount Saint Thomas resident Jill Darvill was angry and perplexed as to the situation so contacted the Australian distributors Sharmill Films with a delightful result.
“They’ve just rung me to tell me [Hoyts at] Warrawong will be part of the nationwide screenings,” Ms Darvill said.
Fellow Whovian (fans of the Doctor) Ciara McMurdo-Far said her uncle first introduced her to the popular BBC series and loved the diversity of each episode.
Since first airing in 1963, Whittaker will be the first female to portray the time-travelling alien known as The Doctor.
Other regional centres to host screenings include Newcastle, Wagga Wagga, Sawtell, Port Macquarie, Orange, Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast, Ballarat and Mildura.
Although the series officially begins on ABC TV on October 7, the cinema screening will also include: additional footage featuring interviews with Whittaker, lead writer Chris Chibnall and the first episode’s director Jamie Childs.
