Shell Cove's version of sculptures by the sea - here's what you need to know

Shell Cove’s annual art festival, Sculptures At Killalea, began because one artist had a vision.

Ian Bell had just jumped out of the surf and thought ‘why don’t we utilise this landscape’.

What began as a weekend exhibition now spans across 10 days, three main venues, with workshops and special events in between.

“In this area there’s a bit of a hole for people to exhibit, you can’t just put them in a shop … [or] a normal gallery because they’re too big,” Mr Bell said.

“This is a good chance for them to exhibit their work and maybe sell a piece.”

Festival organiser Courtney Beaton said they probably underestimated the “power” of the event until 20,000 people wandered through the State Park to see it.

Eighty-seven installations will be exhibited – 50 at Killalea, the rest at the Stockland Shellharbour and the Civic Centre – and officially begins on Thursday September 13.

Saturday the State Park will hose a Family Day from 10am to 2pm, with free art and craft activities for children, workshops, live entertainment and food stalls.

The following weekend the park will host twilight artisan markets with live art demonstrations, live music plus beer and wine.

The ten-day festival is a celebration of art, colour, creativity and culture and is expected to attract thousands of people wandering through the sculptures, taking part in workshops, live demonstrations and entertainment.
