But others on the Mercury’s Facebook page figured, if you’re not speeding you’ve got nothing to worry about.
The Windang Road speed camera collected $1.13 million in fines, largely due to a 10km/h reduction in the speed limit more than 12 months ago.
It seems a year later some motorists still haven’t noticed the speed limit is no longer 70km/h.
“Wait, what? I thought it was 70,” wrote Chantelle Ivanisevic. “What is it now?”
It’s 60km/h, Chantelle, has been since June 2017. She wasn’t the only one who didn’t know – others on the Facebook page said they’d only noticed the drop in speed when a fine landed in their letterbox.
Andrea Gregoriou felt 60km/h was too slow.
“There is no reason the speed limit should be that low,” she wrote.
“They’ve done it purposely for revenue and they think we are stupid.”
Matthew Kortelainen felt the Windang Road camera was a “cash cow”.
“Monday last week I saw three get caught in 20 seconds,” he wrote.
But others pointed out you only got fined if you were actually speeding.
“Funny thing about that speed camera,” wrote Steve Turner, “it hasn’t taken anyone’s photo that was doing the signed speed limit.”
Andy Roberts offered some helpful advice.
“Just stick to 60km/h or just under, you will be fine,” he wrote.
“Keep the money in your pocket.”
