Georgia Matts’ drone shot ‘Paddle Out’ of a surfer memorial was nominated for best news photograph in the regional category.
It was the first ever nomination for Ms Matts, who finished up with the Illawarra Mercury recently to relocate to Newcastle.
Sylvia Liber was also a finalist for 'Butterfly Boy' image of Balgownie boy Ky North, who has a rare skin disorder, nominated for best portrait, feature or lifestyle photograph.
Ms Liber has been nominated and won national media awards on numerous occasions.
The awards were announced at a gala event hosted by The Chaser’s Craig Reucassel and Andrew Hanson at the Sydney Hilton.
