Squiers led the Scarborough team all the way to the final, where they finished as runners-up.
Remarkably, they only won one heat, the repechage round after finishing third in their four-team opening heat.
But they then finished second to Maroubra during the qualifying rounds to make it to the final, edged out of semi-final victory by less than one point but still qualifying as the top two progressed.
However, Maroubra’s Connor O’Leary, Shane Campbell, Jarvis Earle, Paul Holbrook and Nichola Turner showed their class, a 34.52 round one score backed up by 31.57 in the final, the only two 30-plus results of the day.
“We’re so pumped to have won this event,” O’Leary said. “We’ve been trying to win this qualifier for so long and we’ve finally done it.
“It’s an event series we all look forward to all year as the calibre of surfing is always so high.”
The competition also featured South Coast teams Port Kembla, Werri Beach, Woonona, Sandon Point and Jones Beach.
The series now travels to North Narrabeen and Coffs Harbour, then moving to interstate before the final at Newcastle.
