The “Spurs” are a giant professional football club within the monstrosity which is the English Premier League. There are few sporting leagues or teams which can rival the international penetration and following off the EPL and the major EPL clubs.
The club boasts English superstar and winner of the Golden Boot Award at the 2018 World Cup Harry Kane. This is a club of epic proportions even when measured on a global scale. The motto of the Tottenham Hotspurs is Audere est Facere or ‘To Dare is To Do’. Well, it appears the University of Wollongong and the Tottenham Hotspurs have done just that.
The two organisations have announced a significant partnership which will see the Hotspurs set up a global program based at UOW’s Wollongong campus from 2020. The partnership is not only a major coup for UOW but indeed the entire Illawarra region. For a region already rich in football history and culture, on top of the burgeoning university, it’s a clear goal.
“The Club has a fantastic track record in developing young players through its Academy, and we are delighted to be taking these authentic methods to the University of Wollongong,” Tottenham’s Head of Global Football Development Andy Rogers said. “The university has a long history of sporting success and we look forward to working with them to help grow the game and identify the next generation of talented footballers in the region.”
This is an incredible opportunity for young footballers who aspire to continue their education, source world-class coaching and development and possibly find a pathway to be biggest football league in the world.
It adds yet another string to the University of Wollongong’s diverse bow and adds further credence to our region’s reputation and culture for innovation. While the region waits to see whether it may be lucky enough to be again, regain entry into the A League, this is an incredible strike for the sport, the Tottenham Hotspurs and the University of Wollongong.
