Fortunately, he did not repeat such behaviour when handed another jail term on Tuesday, instead managing to keep his cool as he learned he would spend a further eight months behind bars on top of his current sentence.
Prosecution documents said Rose flew into a fit of rage in Wollongong District Court in April when he was unexpectedly sentenced to 14 months’ jail over a violent glassing incident at a Shellharbour hotel in May 2016.
Rose, who had thought he would avoid a full-time jail sentence, swore loudly and kicked the door of the dock open before “shaping up” to prison staff who were attempting to take hold of him.
He then stepped back towards the bar table and picked up two chairs in quick succession, holding each one above his head and throwing them at the officers.
Moments later, one of the officers rounded the dock, grabbed Rose in a bear hug and swiftly tackled him to the ground where he was eventually subdued with the helps of police, sheriffs and other Correctives staff.
Police subsequently charged Rose with property damage and assaulting a law enforcement officer.
He pleaded guilty to the charges in court on Tuesday, prompting police to play footage of the incident during sentencing proceedings.
(The Mercury applied for access to the footage however this was rejected by the court registrar.)
Magistrate Michael Stoddart sentenced Rose to an extra eight months behind bars, saying his behaviour would not be tolerated “in a court of law or anywhere”.
Rose, who had been set to be released on parole in June 2019, will now be released in February 2020
