A hat trick to Alan Warburton guided the Eagles to their breakthrough victory, as the return of Cody Hutchison proved crucial for victors.
“It was really good to get our first win, we were able to hang onto the ball much more then past rounds and we really capitalised on their mistakes,” Hutchison said.
“We still have a few things we need to work on in order to compete a bit more with the top teams like Dapto and Helensburgh but we are all pretty happy with the game.”
A dominant first half from Berkeley set the platform for their comfortable win, and a try in their first set to start the second half helped continue their solid run.
Thirroul were unlucky not to score a handful of tries after the halftime break, with three opportunities denied by forward passes, drop balls or last-gasp try-saving defence.
Berkeley’s ability to hold the ball for sustained periods proved the difference.
“Our captain, Nicholas [Lambert], really focused on our pre game talk to be about ball security,” Hutchison said.
“We wanted to recycle the ball a lot and really get the older fellas on their team running a bit more.
“We also really wanted to focus on our talk and communication to get all of us on the same page – attacking the right players and working over the whole six on the field rather than the two middles.”
Meanwhile, Helensburgh jumped into top spot on the ladder with a dominant 7-2 win over the previously unbeaten Dapto.
