In April 1880, a group of Wollongong pioneers had a vision to create a mutual society that would meet community needs and build prosperity by providing affordable housing loans for its members.
With the support of the community, IMB has grown significantly and in 2015 became a mutual bank, owned by their customers, offering a full range of financial services to almost 200,000 customers.
IMB’s purpose remains as it was 138 years ago; to make their customers and communities better off by providing simple, authentic banking experiences and highly competitive products – while creating strong connections with customers, small businesses and the communities.

IMB continues to deliver highly competitive products and services to their growing customer base across the Illawarra, Canberra and Sydney regions through 48 branches, mobile lending teams (1), small business specialists, the accredited financial planning (2) team and a range of online and mobile banking applications.
Because IMB Bank was formed and is owned by their customers, they exist to make them better off. And, they know that for them to grow, their customers and communities need to thrive.
That’s why it’s important to them too that in addition to award-winning competitive products and services, IMB Bank provides significant community support.
On top of their many grass roots community sponsorships, the bank created the IMB Community Foundation and Shire Community Foundation which have provided more than $9.1m to over 650 community initiatives.
These are just some of the reasons IMB has a 95 per cent customer satisfaction rating (3) and why they were awarded Best Mutual Bank of the Year in 2018 at the Australian Retail Banking Awards (4).
IMB’s products are very competitive and their support for the community significant, but they know that investing in technology to make banking simpler for customers is equally important.
IMB recently launched an ‘authenticated in-app messaging’ service, which was a first in Australian banking, so customers don’t have to call IMB to contact them securely – it’s just one example of how they are working to make customers’ banking experience better.
The bank is constantly delighted and inspired by the caring spirit of the community. As a home grown organisation formed by the community 138 years ago, IMB is dedicated to helping the local community thrive and says that seeing the benefits of their efforts and of those around them is very rewarding.
