From inside the house, Biljana Bulakovska didn’t notice the sound of her husband’s red sports bike hitting a tree about 2.30pm Saturday. If she’d looked out her front door she would have seen it, but somehow paramedics reached Sasho’s side before she did.
Only a few moments after 46-year-old Sasho had pulled out of his Chillawong Circuit, Blackbutt driveway – licensed, wearing a helmet and full riding gear – he was gone.
I was hysterical. I was trying to get to him but they [paramedics] wouldn’t let us.
“I had my neighbour knocking on my door,” Biljana told the Mercury on Monday.
“She could hardly talk but she said, ‘you have to go down there’. When I looked she said, ‘it’s Sash’.”
“I was hysterical. I was trying to get to him but they [paramedics] wouldn’t let us.
“I was hitting them – ‘get the f--- back and save him!’. It was quite upsetting that they wouldn’t let us go to the scene.
“Obviously they didn’t want us to see that and have it as our last memory. But I wanted to be there.
“We had such big plans. Twenty-six years together.”
Sasho, father to Samantha, 23 and Brandon, 19, worked as a sales manager at Autosmart International.
Family members have recalled his “loud and infectious laugh”, “vibe that lit up a room” and ability to make everyone around him laugh. He would help anyone, but lived for his children and was “the best husband – no man can compare”, to Biljana.
She gave him her blessing before he bought the powerful bike, a Suzuki GSX-R750, about three weeks ago.
He rode it “many times” in that short period and had owned two bikes before it, Biljana notes.
He was riding with two friends close behind him when he left the road, clipped one tree then ran head-on into another.
Police have not ruled out speed as a factor in the crash, but Biljana is anxious to hear the outcome of an expert inquiry into the roadworthiness of his bike.
“This is the hardest bit. He left the home and within a minute he hit a tree. How? There was no way he was speeding. It’s not like he’s an inexperienced rider. His two best mates, like brothers, were with him. What happened? Did the gears get stuck? No one knows,” she said.
“It just didn’t make sense.
“He was wearing the right gear – jacket, gloves. That’s why I don’t understand. He didn’t even get a chance to fight for his life.”
“He left us all empty and shocked. I’m shattered. I’ve lost the love of my life.”
Of six motorists killed on state roads at the weekend, five were motorcyclists.
The toll has prompted a warning from patrol police, who have urged riders to be more aware of their surroundings, and to ride according to their skill level.
