In response to the page 7 article by Ben Langford, "'Massive blow' for solar" (Illawarra Mercury, Monday September 24, 2018) Carolyn Lee does not need subsidies, if she is managing her solar business well.

New owner of the Tahmoor mine Sanjeev Gupta wants people to believe renewable energy is cheaper than coal.
But if that is true, why did Mr Gupta invest in the Tahmoor mine?
What is not considered regarding renewable energy like solar and wind is that reliable "back up power" from coal or nuclear generators are required.
This is what happens in European countries.
And South Australia proved this point that without reliable base load power, renewable energy is a failure.
In July, coal overtook iron ore as Australia's largest export earner at $58.1 billion.
Our high quality coal is being used to fuel new clean coal-fired generators in much of Asia and parts of Europe. Uranium mining and exports has occured safely in Australia for over three decades.
By 2019, it is projected that Australia will increase uranium exports by 8,900 tonnes.
According to the offical data from the Australian Government, our uranium is used in nuclear power stations in the USA, Japan, England, Sweden, South Korea, China, Spain, Canada and Taiwan.

SHOULDERING THE BLAME
Is it the same evil spirits that gave Billy Slater the best player award after only playing two games in the state of origin series this year, that let him off on the blatant shoulder charge during the semi-finals?
What a crock.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT OVER HOMELESSNESS
Regarding ‘Residents fear a’tent city’ (Illawarra Mercury, September 26), how dare a 57 year old, homeless women find shelter in Lang Park, amongst some of the best real estate in Wollongong.
And how dare she try to keep herself and her dogs, probably her only family, warm with a fire and plastic sheeting?
Why should picnicking parents have to explain to their children that there are people our society has let down and are homeless?
With over 105,000 people homeless, they’ll all want to come to Lang Park and pitch a tent.
They should go back to the sand hill or under the bridge they came from.
Or, maybe, we should petition our political parties, as the residents of West Dapto did to stop the jail, insisting they create public housing for all Australians, starting with the homeless.

‘WITH RESPECT I DISAGREE’
I read where Tanya Plibersec was quoted as saying about the ABC’s integrity: “It is the most respected news organisation in Australia”.
I thought to myself: if she was serious, she better not put that claim out there for a vote of agreement because she might get a horrible shock.
