Parts of Warrawong Plaza were evacuated after police received a report of a man carrying a weapon about 12.30pm on Monday.
Lake Illawarra Police Inspector Paul Allman said a member of the public told the plaza’s security they believed a man was carrying a concealed weapon.
He said the food court and a number of cinemas were evacuated before police focused on a particular cinema within the complex where a man was “secured”.
“He was spoken to, he was searched. No weapon was located,” Inspector Allman said.
“We take [these kinds of reports] seriously. Our response was coordinated and we worked with management to achieve a good result here… no one’s been injured or hurt.”
He said the man spoke with police and was not under arrest.
The cinemas have resumed operation and the food court has been reopened.
More to come.
