Parkour, otherwise known as free running, is the practice of jumping over obstacles to get from one place to another – like a chase scene in a film where the actors move like ninjas through the streets.

Di Tommaso was a “garbage man” but now a sponsored athlete who will be a guest judge at the event and assist with workshops.

“I come from a background of figure skating and ballet, but decided that a full time job as a garbage man was the way to go until I got to a stage where I could become a full time athlete,” he said.

The Burgh’s director of children’s programs and events Charlie Truscott said parkour artists could go on to do stunt work or be a teacher, but to be a sponsored athlete was the highest point you could go.

Event co-ordinator Maddy Bockett said they expected more than 150 entries, double from last year.

The competition is open to anyone aged seven to adults, from beginner through to advanced. Each competitor will be judged on difficulty, execution, flow, creativity and their overall run.
