Police found the body of single mother Kristie Powell only a few metres from her five-month-old son.
The infant was uninjured and has been placed in the care of grandparents.
A GoFundMe page called Baby Powell Benefit was set up by friends of Ms Powell’s family to give the boy “the life and all of the opportunities he deserves and that Kristie always wanted”.
“This (fundraiser) has been made by our beautiful friends,” Kristie’s brother Ryan Powell posted on Facebook.
“We by no means expect anything from any of you, however we know that many are grieving with no clue what to do.
“All funds will go to our boy and his needs in this tough time.”
The GoFundMe page had raised more than $3000 in the four hours it has been running.
“Nothing can replace the love that Kristie gave her darling boy but he is so blessed to have a very special and loving family to care for him,” the fundraising page reads.
“To give him the life and all of the opportunities he deserves and that Kristie always wanted we felt it was fitting to raise some funds to hopefully make the next few weeks, months or years smoother.
“So he can have new clothes when he needs, nutritious food, an abundance of books, good education and the best medical care available.”
Meantime, tributes for a woman described as a “beautiful soul” are pouring in from shocked friends.
Sheridan Meades said her heart was broken.
“I can't believe this has happened it's so not real for me!” she wrote on Facebook.
“You are my best friend, my rock. I don’t know what I'm going to do without you, my heart is broken.
“I love you so much! Why did this have to happen to such a beautiful soul.”
Josh Skipp wrote: “Thank you for all the memories you made for us from those years at school Kristie.”
“My heart is heavy with the thought of your passing.
“God rest your beautiful soul.”
Alija Stašionis wrote: “Words cant explain how devastated i am that you were taken from here much too early.”
“I know your flying around up there with the other angels.
“Im so thankful to have known you and to be your friend.”
