Food Fairness Illawarra is encouraging growers, gardeners, cooks, educators and curious consumers to come to the fair on Thursday, October 18 from 6pm.
The aim of the event is to connect and inspire people to learn about and tackle food insecurity in the region.
Food Fairness Illawarra secretariat Berbel Franse said ‘fair’ or ‘good’ food was a movement that would see everyone access fresh, nutritious, safe and sustainably-grown food regularly.
“After the successful sold out 2016 and 2017 events, we are excited to bring back Connecting over Fair Food - a platform for the local fair food community to connect in order to build a stronger and more resilient fair food movement in the Illawarra,” she said.
“The local speakers, expo stallholders and caterers involved in the event come from across Wollongong, Shellharbour and Kiama, and represent a fantastic diversity of individuals and organisations passionate about good food for all.”
The event, which will be held at Shellharbour Civic Centre, will focus on ways to create a sustainable food future for the next generation.
Speakers will discuss how to reduce food waste, research into the effects of unhealthy food advertising on children’s diets and how teachers can implement food programs, gardens and healthy canteen strategies in their schools.
The (event allows) the local community to connect in order to build a stronger and more resilient fair food movement.

The Red Kitchen and The Pines Kiama will cater the event.
“The Red Kitchen is known for its mission to provide sustainable and locally-sourced produce,” Ms Franse said.
“The catering company provides seasonal food and focuses on ways to minimise packaging by buying in bulk.”
Fair organisers have adopted a “pay as you feel” approach where people can donate between $10 to $50 to attend the event.
The event will celebrate National Fair Food Week from October 6 to 14.
Shellharbour, Wollongong and Kiama councils, NSW Health, and Healthy Cities Illawarra are supporting the event.
