A DPI/Fisheries game fish tagging program report shows a black marlin tagged and released by Newcastle & Port Stephens GFC boat Rarely In, during a recent tournament, has been recaptured only 24 hours after it was released.
During the initial capture, the marlin became tail wrapped during the fight and was in near exhausted condition when it was brought to the boat.
However the crew chose to tag the marlin and revive it boatside prior to releasing it, however its condition was noted on the tag card as being “poor on release”.
The following day around the same time (12pm) the marlin ate another bait presented by Sydney GFC boat Compton who re-released the marlin for the second time in 24 hours, this time in good condition. It was very close to the original capture location.
