Handling company GrainCorp has received environmental approval to “import grain into Port Kembla to make up the grain shortfall”, Environment Protection Authority documents show.
After storage in silos, imported grain will be loaded onto trucks, or trains using a temporary conveyor.
It is anticipated stock feed will comprise a significant portion of the imports, with much of the state in drought.
GrainCorp recently lifted its earnings guidance for the current financial year to a profit of about $75 million – up almost 50 per cent on its previous forecast.
But it forecast troubled times ahead from October.
