There has been only one club which has been there for the entire 40-year journey of the National Basketball League. One club. That club is the Illawarra Hawks.
The Illawarra Mercury has been there right alongside the Illawarra Hawks every step of the way.
Together the Hawks and the Mercury have been proud, passionate supporters of this region.
This is a club, much like our region, which has to fight and claw for everything.
This season Hawks coach Rob Beveridge has built a team which fill fight for every inch.
The Illawarra loves a fight and the Illawarra will love this team.
“I’ve had a real chip on my shoulder,” coach Rob Beveridge told the crowd at the season launch on Wednesday night.
“I wasn’t happy with how the season ended. I was disappointed, I felt we’d let everybody down.
“So I wanted to recruit a bunch of guys who had a chip on their shoulder.
“I looked at players in the past who could flat out play but wanted to prove themselves.
“The players we’ve recruited are firstly, just great people ... but they are hard-nosed competitors.
“We have to understand what our strengths are and what our identity is and we’ve recruited a bunch of tough nuts in this team.”
The armchair experts are again writing the Illawarra Hawks off as they do every year, but this is a team hell bent on playing for each other and this region.
Get along to the WEC to support the Hawks as they fight for every inch.
To celebrate the Hawks 40th year we’ve welcome the new NBL season with a special edition.
To coach Rob Beveridge, the team and general manager Mat Campbell and his front office team, the Illawarra Mercury is proudly with you every step of the league.
Proudly remember this team has something no other team in this league can boast: 40 years of history.
