Local resident Yvette Hank made the discovery of a series of images and notes on cardboard along with used syringes at Oakleigh Park on Thursday, and alerted authorities.

“The kids’ playground is about 200-300 metres away, it’s like right behind the fence of the cricket pitch,” Ms Hank said.

“[When] I saw them I nearly threw up in my mouth.”

After Ms Hank posted the images on social media as a warning for the community it has been shared more than 1000 times with hundreds of comments from parents outraged over the find.

Lake Illawarra duty officer Acting Inspector Peter Northey said officers were currently investigating and it was something they were taking very seriously.

“It’s something we are going to investigate to rule out there is a predator,” he said.

“I’m hoping it’s just a practical joke but it’s obviously something we do take serious until we can rule everything else out.”

While he called the images inappropriate and disgusting, he urged the public not to panic but be vigilant.

“If you see something that’s not right ring us,” Inspector Northey said.

At this stage there was nothing to suggest there was a homeless person living at the park.
