Two friends will purchase a cheap vehicle and drive from Perth to Sydney via Uluru, all in the name of charity.
Wollongong resident Ben Marlow and friend Grahame Yager are taking part in the ‘Shitbox Rally’ for the first time in 2019.
The charity car rally is a fundraiser for the Cancer Council. Each team must provide a car (valued at no more than $1000) to undertake the journey in.
Mr Marlow and Mr Yager have formed the ‘BBQ Boys’ fundraising team.
“Grahame and I have both been affected by cancer and we wanted to do something crazy and mad to raise money to help make people’s lives better,” Mr Marlow said.
Mr Marlow, a property valuer, said they had been on the waiting list for three years to participate.
“My dad Jim actually passed away from cancer in 2016, so it’s something we really wanted to do as a one-off thing,” Mr Marlow said.
The pair are yet to purchase their vehicle for the rally.
“I like my cars, but I can change a spark plug and that’s about it,” Mr Marlow laughed.
“If something goes wrong we’re in serious trouble, because we’re not exactly trained mechanics.”
The 2019 ‘Shitbox Rally’ is on from May 8 to May 17.
All participating teams must raise a minimum of $5000.
