The competition was held at Bondi Beach and coincided with World Egg Day on Friday.
Television personality, chef and Australian Eggs ambassador Manu Feildel, alongside two of the nation’s most highly regarded restaurant critics Anthony Huckstep and Elizabeth Meryment, crowned The Blue Swimmer for their award-winning dish; Baghdad eggs with spiced lentils, stewed peppers, smoked almonds and cumin yoghurt on flatbread.
“The first Eggsellence Awards have been a total success with hundreds of entries, recognising the nation’s love of eggs as a healthy, affordable, versatile and delicious ingredient,” Mr Feildel said.
Head chef at The Blue Swimmer, Lauren Brown made the trip from Gerroa to Bondi for the cook-off.
“We are thrilled to have won the Australian Eggsellence Awards. The secret to our eggs are in the spices and our fresh, local ingredients,” she said.
Eggs are a huge part of Australian culture, with 17 million eggs being consumed a day – a total of over 6 billion eggs a year.
Ms Brown competed against four other short-listed chefs from all around Australia including:
- The Dining & Co [North Ryde, NSW], who cooked up their delicious twist on the brunch classic of poached eggs, haloumi and avocado.
- Industry Beans [Fitzroy, VIC], who brought the taste of Melbourne to the shores of Sydney with their unique marinated rare beef and peanut crusted eggs dish.
- Morning After [The West End, QLD], who showed the true versatility of eggs with their modern take on Turkish eggs alongside smoked eggplant and dill yoghurt.
- Caffiend [Cairns, QLD], who travelled from far north Queensland to present their Asian-influenced miso scrambled eggs with spring onions, black sesame, bonito and shichimi Japanese peppers.
Australian Eggs have launched the Australian Eggsellence Awards in an effort to scour the nation for the best egg dishes. The awards have uncovered Australia’s best egg dish, this World Egg Day (October 12).
