But when the sun started to shine at Kembla Grange on Saturday revelers started turning out in large numbers for the 29th installment of the largest regional Oktoberfest in Australia.
Duty manager Robert Prstec said last year 500 came along to the Big Tent for the start of the entertainment on the Friday night, compared to 300 this year.
But when the weather warmed up people started coming out in force to the volunteer run event which draws thousands of people who dress up every year.
“There was somewhere between 1600 and 2000 people here on Saturday,” Mr Prstec said.
“They are a unique group of people who come out every year. We always look forward to seeing the new outfits.”
Saturday’s activities continued well into the night with music, dancing and food all day.
As is traditionally the case Sunday was family day with many more German dance groups, Masters of Oompah providing authentic German entertainment. As well as many activities and play areas for children such as laser skirmish and other rides, face painting and a balloon animal blower. There were also sausage eating, strong man, strong woman, nail hammer and German beard competitions across the weekend.
Mr Prstec said Police and security attended the event but there were no major incidents as everyone enjoyed the event with good behaviour.
“I would like to thank everyone for being responsible,” he said.
Mr Prstec said the event was made possible and the success it has become by the large number of volunteers who put in so much work every year.
