Owning your own home, buying a piece of land and building your own custom-built home in the hope of turning it into your private paradise.
When the land adjacent to Albion Park was released it was heralded as a future township any Australian would love to be a part of.
The Tullimbar project came into life way back in 2000 and since then many people have invested their life’s hard-earned.
The only trouble is, more recently the development has changed hands and many of the aspects that first attracted people to invest in this area have seemingly disappeared.
A read of the new 1881 Tullimbar development website reads:
“1881 Tullimbar is a boutique estate nestled on the foothills of the Macquarie Valley in the Illawarra region.
“Steeped in history, 1881 Tullimbar embraces the natural amphitheater provided by the looming Illawarra Escarpment, harnessing a serene and comforting atmosphere.
“With Shellharbour and Wollongong CBD nearby, 1881 Tullimbar is a refreshed vision for this fast-growing area of the Illawarra.”
Sounds good, right?
Yet, as is often the case, the real story lies in what it doesn’t say.
The Tullimbar Town Centre Action Centre Group has launched a change.org petition to save their town centre from being scrapped.
The group says a development application lodged by the site’s new developers removes the original plans for a retail/commercial development plan in Tullimbar in favour of more residential lots.
Gone, they say, is the town hall, medical centre, cafes, gyms and community facilities, instead replaced by smaller blocks for high density housing.
The action group says much of the promised vision they bought into would be gone with the revised development application.
For this group of Illawarra residents, their hope of buying into the great Australian dream, has turned into a nightmare.
The Tullimbar Town Action Group has vowed not to take this lying down.
