Ambulance Australia takes viewers through every step of a medical emergency from the moment a call is made to Triple-Zero through to response from paramedics on the road as they treat the injured and the ill.

“Most people don’t get to see what happens inside an ambulance,” said Tammie Marshall.

The 35-year-old wants people to see the high-pressure environment in which they work through the documentary series, how they save lives in the field and why an ambulance is a limited resource and not a taxi.

“[So people can] understand what constitutes an emergency and what skills we do have,” Ms Marshall said.

“If someone’s in cardiac arrest we do everything the hospital does but we do it out on the field, if somebody’s unconscious we can manage their airway, if somebody’s broken a limb and it needs to be realigned we can straighten [it].”

Life as a paramedic also has its dangers, which Ms Marshall said the public will see during the television series.

In one instance while filming a patient “exploded” and decided he did not want to be on his way to hospital and tried to do everything in his power to get out.

At other times the environment can be the danger as Ms Marshall recalled her scariest moment on the job to be when she and her paramedic partner had to barricade themselves in a bedroom with their patient.

They went to a house to attend a “seizure” but found the victim had been attacked and soon discovered the offender was still in the home.

“I started looking around the room I realized the knife was sitting just on the bedside table just inside the door,” Ms Marshall said.

A call to police who promptly attended without lights and sirens meant they apprehended the offender and the victim was transported safely to hospital.

After running the successful clothing store Detour with her sister in Stockland Shellharbour, Ms Mashall said she literally woke up one day and decided she wanted more.

Six years later she hasn’t looked back and loves every minute of her highly stressful but highly rewarding job.
