A passer-by spotted a red-bellied black snake hiding in a garden bed on the sidewalk.
Warilla resident Vedran Stajic was getting a haircut when a woman came over to alert him of the unwanted creature.
“I was curious so I went over to check it out,” he said.
“The snake was seeking shelter in a pot planter before he got out and was on the move.
“It was moving slowly along the footpath and that’s when I took the photo.
“The police and a snake catcher or ranger was called to come collect it.
“The snake moved into a nearby construction site and the crowd lost site of it.
“I left but a colleague stayed until the police arrived. The police couldn’t see it or catch it.
“The snake is still on the lose.”
Mr Stajic said it was a “little bit of excitement” for his Tuesday.
“Seeing the snake was a random encounter on the street today,” he said.
“The snake drew a crowd and most people looked shocked or interested to see it in the CBD.
“Some people just kept walking but there weren’t any screams or squeals.”
Snakes have now come out of brumation, a hibernation-like state, and they are on the lookout for food and to breed.
Locals, who come across a snake, should keep a safe distance, take a photo of it, contact a licenced snake catcher or the police and keep an eye on it.
