On Wednesday the Mercury ran a story about Transport for NSW starting planning for an accessibility upgrade at Fairy Meadow station.

While there are no details of what could be in store, the fact that the only platform access from Elliotts Road is via stairs could suggest lifts are a possibility.

“Unanderra – which is used a lot more – has been crying out for lifts for decades,” Dylan Arvela said on the Mercury’s Facebook page.

Ian Monsuere felt Unanderra station should be ahead of Fairy Meadow when it came to the installation of lifts.

“At least you can walk down there [at Fairy Meadow] without the need for stairs – lets get Unanderra sorted first,” he said on Facebook.

“Unanderra is in need of a revamp and lift access,” wrote Amy Carfray.

“It’s absolutely ridiculous how people with disabilities have no wheelchair access or even the elderly can’t access this train station.”

Fairy Meadow resident Mary-Ann Barr felt Unanderra should come before the station in her own suburb.

“How disgusting if they did lifts here before Unanderra,” she wrote.

Other readers pointed out that more trains stopped at Unanderra than Fairy Meadow, which meant there was a more pressing need for lifts there.

“Every single train stops at Unanderra, only off-peak stops at Fairy Meadow,” wrote Aleks Ivaneza.

Some readers figured neither station would see lifts any time soon – if at all.

“If Unanderra had waited 10 years then Fairy Meadow doesn't have much chance,” wrote Pamela Clark. “The forgotten Illawarra.”
