Kiama Village owners ISPT Super Property have lodged a development application with Kiama Council to bring an ALDI store to the shopping centre.
If the application receives council approval, the build is expected to start in mid-2020.
The development application includes an extension of the centre to accommodate for the ALDI supermarket, some new specialty stores and a new double-deck car park.
“We are delighted to have reached agreement with ALDI to open a new store at Kiama Village,” ISPT National Portfolio Manager Kate Mathewson said.
“Kiama has been eagerly awaiting an ALDI store for some time, so this should be a great outcome for the community.
“Together with Woolworths and our specialty stores, we are excited at the prospect of providing customers with an expanded retail offer, while the proposed car park upgrade will result in more spaces and a more convenient shopping experience for our customers.”
ISPT classifies Kiama Village as a convenience-based neighbourhood centre owned anchored by a Woolworths store and complemented by 16 speciality stores including The Reject Shop and Bakers Delight.
In 2017, ALDI’s plans to open up shop in town fell through.
ALDI had intended on opening a store on the corner of Shoalhaven and Akuna streets in 2018, however, the council-owned site had not been sold to the developer, construction has not started, and ALDI Australia confirmed the plans had been delayed.
“We have identified Kiama as an area of interest, however ALDI will not be opening a store in 2018,” an ALDI Australia spokesperson said.
“The store opening date is subject to design and construction time-frames set by the site developer and we will update the community as our plans progress.”
In response, local residents took to Facebook, many of whom argued Kiama’s grocery market lacked competition.
