Police allege Bradley Green, 23, of Koonawarra, punched the security officer in the head and spat a mouthful of saliva at him while in the grip of an early-hours rage, October 15.
He handed himself in at Lake Illawarra Police Station four days later and was granted bail at Wollongong Local Court Saturday morning.
Green’s lawyer told the court his client was experiencing an extreme toothache when he’d sought help at the hospital emergency department about 3.30am.
According to the police account of events, he grew angry after visiting the triage room, when a nurse told him to return to the waiting room to await the attention of a doctor.
“There’s no f-cking way I’m sitting back in there, you stupid b-tch. You can’t make me,” he allegedly replied.
Police allege he repeatedly swore at attending security staff and clung to a chair to prevent himself from being removed from the triage area, even when told the wait wouldn’t be long, and that his behaviour was preventing other patients from receiving the nurse’s attention.
Green is accused of punching a security officer as the man bent down to remove the chair from his reach. At that, four security staffers marched him out the front of the hospital and asked him to leave.
A security camera allegedly then captured him spitting in the same officer’s face.
Sergeant Davis opposed bail in court on Saturday.
“The conduct of the accused was appalling. It was conduct towards professional people who were carrying out their duties,” she said.
“It would have been a very frightening experience for anyone present, which would also include member of the public attending the ED.”
The court heard Green had made arrangements to enter a residential drug rehabilitation program in January, and was in regular contact with a counselor.
Bail was granted on the condition he not enter the hospital grounds and that he report to police daily.
The matter returns to Port Kembla Local Court October 31.
