The new setup replaces the Academy’s girls rugby sevens program.
The program, to be headed by experienced coach Tony Leeder-Smith, commenced with trials for boys and girls at University of Wollongong. Stephanie Ball and Brooke Harper will also feature in the leadership team.
The program aims to provide a further development pathway for talented rugby players, with additional sessions to be held on top of standard club commitments.
The bulk of the program will be run from November through to May, providing squad members with valuable pre-season skills and fitness training ahead of the 2019 season.
The launch of the IAS rugby union program comes on the back of the selection of six Illawarra girls in a NSW under 17 rugby sevens train-on squad.
