The Mercury understands police were called to the Greek Orthodox church on Stewart Street around 6.50am on Sunday, after reports of a break and enter occurring at the location.
Police said they found a 38-year-old man inside allegedly in possession of housebreaking implements.
“Our police were on scene within only a couple of minutes of being called, affecting the arrest of this man before he even had time to leave the church,” Inspector Mark Walker said.
“We were alerted by a member of the community who saw the man acting suspiciously and a prompt call to Triple Zero meant we received the information straight away.”
The man was taken to Wollongong Police Station and charged with break and enter with intent to steal and possess housebreaking implements.
He was refused bail to appear at Wollongong Local Court on Monday October 29.
