The inferno that gutted a Corrimal High School building early Saturday morning has been extinguished.
But firefighters remain on scene trying to extinguish the smouldering fire, which has totally destroyed the industrial arts building at the school.
NSW Fire and Rescue duty commander Illawarra Andrew Erlik said several classrooms in the building were well alight and totally engulfed in fire when crews arrived just after 5am.
Some school staff members who arrived just around 8am, were visibly shaken.

It’s not known yet whether the destroyed building and classrooms contained artworks of students sitting their HSC.
The cause of the fire is under investigation by NSW Police and NSW Fire and Rescue and is being treated as suspicious.
