On Monday, three people were hospitalised after an out-of-control truck ploughed through multiple cars and into a unit complex.

In December 2006 a runaway truck overloaded with building material sped down Mt Ousley Road, across the Princes Highway roundabout and into the car park, where it hit at least three vehicles.

Fifteen people were rushed to hospital after the crash, including four children who were among a group from an Austinmer day care centre heading to a Wiggles concert at WIN Entertainment Centre.

The driver of the truck, 22-year-old Admon Romel – who would be caught driving while disqualified three times in the following year – was sentenced two years' jail over the crash.

Four years ago, in May 2014, a truck driver lost control of his vehicle as he headed down Mt Ousley Road towards the same roundabout.

He hit the roundabout and the prime mover with a mobile crane on its trailer overturned on the busy ring road between McDonald's and the BP service station.

People rushed to the scene to try and extricate the trapped driver.

Wollongong Police Acting Inspector Dan Richardson said the driver's actions helped to avoid a more serious incident.

"The driver has done well to miss other vehicles, as he attempted to warn others by sounding his horn," Insp Richardson said.

In May this year 19-year-old Hisham Kartoumeh died when his white Mazda 6 hatchback left the roundabout and crashed into signage at the BP petrol station.

At the time a Roads and Maritime Services spokesman said between 2013 and 2017 there had been three casualty crashes and seven tow-away crashes recorded within 10 metres of the roundabout.
